Steel Service Centre Chooses Sustainability

thyssenkrupp Materials UK awards Conformity Declaration Certificate to Davro Steel for bluemint® Recycled Steel.

The leading material supplier and supply chain solutions provider – thyssenkrupp Materials UK, proudly announced that it has awarded Davro Steel, a prominent steel service centre in the West Midlands, with a conformity declaration certificate for their commitment to sustainability through the use of bluemint® recycled steel.

The conformity declaration attests that thyssenkrupp Steel Europe has successfully saved an impressive 61.386 tonnes of CO2eq in the production of Davro Steel’s order, adhering to the highest industry standards DIN EN ISO 14064 and 14067. TÜV Süd has validated these CO2eq savings, along with the corresponding volume of bluemint® recycled products, confirming reduced specific CO2 emissions.

This certification empowers Davro Steel to factor in specific CO2-emissions of 0.75 t CO2eq/t bluemint® recycled hot-rolled coil when calculating their Scope 3 emissions and product carbon footprint. The recycled bluemint® steel will be key in Davro Steel’s product offering to the build and construction industry, reinforcing their commitment to sustainable practices.

Terry Nightingale, Director – Mild Steel at thyssenkrupp Materials UK, stated: “We are proud to partner with Davro Steel in their journey towards sustainability. The conformity declaration underscores our shared commitment to reducing environmental impact and fostering eco-friendly practices within the steel industry.”

Davro Steel is not only adopting bluemint® recycled steel but is also making significant investments into streamlining its own operations. The company is introducing shop floor automation to minimise waste, aligning with their lean manufacturing strategy. This includes acquiring the latest automated coil processing equipment, ensuring efficiency and sustainability throughout their services.

Greg Anthony, Managing Director at Davro Steel added: “Our commitment to environmental responsibility is evident in every aspect of our company, from the materials we choose to our operational and logistical practices. We believe the collaboration with thyssenkrupp Materials UK sets a new standard for the industry, demonstrating that sustainable choices can be economically viable. Our investment in bluemint® reflects our dedication to minimising our carbon footprint while providing top quality products to our customers. This marks a pivotal moment in our journey towards a more sustainable and environmentally-conscious future.”

The application of bluemint® recycled hot-rolled coil products extends beyond construction and architecture, making a positive impact also on the solar industry. The CO2 savings are calculated from cradle-to-gate in accordance with industry standards, including DIN EN ISO/IEC 17029, TÜV SÜD VERIsteel Standard, and other relevant norms, ensuring transparency and credibility.

thyssenkrupp Steel Europe, as the exclusive supplier of mild steel for thyssenkrupp Materials UK, produces the reduced CO2 product bluemint® at its Duisburg site. The product not only maintains high-quality steel standards but also represents a significant step towards achieving a climate-neutral steel industry. The collaboration between thyssenkrupp Materials UK and Davro Steel sets an example for other stakeholders to follow suit and contribute to a more sustainable future.
